Modifying SBIRT for Suicide Intervention

Suicide rates continue to rise across the country and within the state of Idaho. Counselors are tasked with staying abreast of current research and best practices within the field. Research supports annual trainings and professional development related to suicide prevention. Presenters will provide the most current data and trends related to suicide prevention.SBIRT- Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment, is an evidence-based practice that has traditionally been used in the area of substance abuse. The presenters have modified the SBIRT model to be used in the area of suicide intervention and will demonstrate strategies of how to use the new model. Counselors, especially school counselors are often looking for resources in how to appropriately assess and refer clients/students for further services. The modified SBIRT model provides an understandable and well researched method of talking to individuals in crisis. The presenters will use both lecture and demonstration to explain the model and allow for participants to practice using the strategies.
