5 Mindful Ways to Shift the Climate of Your Classroom

It is no secret that there is a learning gap among youth in U.S. schools across the nation. Research suggests that environmental, social challenges and access to essential needs are lending to the learning gap. Counselors, classroom teachers and administrators are starving for tools and resources to apply in the school day and in the classroom that support students in a whole child methodology. In this workshop-style presentation, we will address the equity gap and provide an innovative approach to social-emotional learning, mindfulness and youth development. We will provide new resources for middle and high school educators to use that address: self- awareness, self- regulation, relationship skills, social awareness and responsible decision-making skills. Research also tells us that when these approaches are successful, attendance is higher and disciplinary action is lessened. Moreover, upon using these approaches students will benefit by learning necessary life skills (soft skills, workability skills) that employers are now calling the most important skills needed to successfully navigate a career or job. Our approach is especially fitting for under-performing school populations due to the enormous need for resources in this area and how easily the content is integrated into classroom lessons.
