Introduction to Play Therapy

This presentation provides a basic introduction to play therapy.  The history and theory behind play therapy will be reviewed as well as basic techniques and concepts.  Play therapy can be applied to nearly any existing counseling theory and counselors who currently work with children or who are interested in incorporating play into their practice will learn how to begin using play therapeutically, the process for becoming credentialed as a play therapist, how play therapy fits among the many creative and expressive arts therapies, and the evidence behind play therapy as an effective approach across ages.

Learning Objectives: 

- Understand the value of metaphor in play therapy
-Practice basic play therapy skills of tracking and reflecting
-Learn and practice three different structured interventions which can be incorporated into their practice immediately
-Identify the steps to becoming a play therapist and integrating this effective approach into practice with clients
